Libraries, Teens, and MySpace?

One might ask how we can even think of putting MySpace and libraries in the same sentence. Many people, especially adults, think of MySpace as a place that is dangerous to teens and attracts online predators. I was one of those adults. Then, I came across an article in The School Library Journal.

So what do libraries, teens, and MySpace have in common? As of last July, 55 libraries in the United States had a MySpace page. They've added animation, sound effects, and eye-catching banners. Oleck says that MySpace is a wonderful way for libraries to keep in touch with teens (2007). Lisa Lindsay, a teen librarian at Sunnyside Regional Library in Fresno, California says, "They don't leave their home phone numbers, but they're constantly checking their MySpace page" (Oleck, 2007, p. 16). This popular social networking site seems to be helping this age group to stay connected to the library. Teens are even sending messages to libraries.

What do you think about using MySpace to attract teens to libraries? Please share your thoughts here.

That is an interesting article. I am a middle school teacher too, and I see how myspace is such a big part of their social lives. I know how scared some adults are of myspace, but I think if parents monitor their teens, it does not have to be a scary thing. If libraries can get to teens through myspace, I say do it. We have to change with the times, or libraries will get lost in the dust.

I think you need to approach teens on their terms, when possible. If they feel more comfortable contacting a library through MySpace, I don't see why it would be harmful.
It might make them more comfortable with the library and more likely to go to the library building.
